Complete Guide to the TCF Scholarship Application
Quick tip
Start your application at least 3 weeks before the deadline. Most applicants need 5-7 business days to gather transcripts and letters of recommendation.
Before You Begin
Before you open the application portal, take 15 minutes to gather the basics. Having these ready will save you time and prevent incomplete submissions. Every year, a significant number of applications are delayed because of missing documents that could have been prepared in advance.
You'll need:
Creating Your Portal Account
All TCF applications go through the online portal. If you applied in a previous year, your account still exists — just reset your password if needed. New applicants should create an account using their legal name as it appears on their CIRI documentation.
The portal supports document uploads up to 10MB per file. We accept PDF, JPG, and PNG formats. If you have trouble uploading, try reducing the file size or converting to PDF first.
Important
Use the same email address each year. Creating duplicate accounts can delay your application review.
Eligibility Verification
The first step in every application is eligibility verification. You'll need to confirm your connection to CIRI — either as an original shareholder or as a descendant. The system will ask for your CIRI shareholder number or your parent/grandparent's information.
If you don't have your shareholder number, contact CIRI directly at (907) 274-8638. They can help you verify your status. This step is required before you can access any application forms.
Writing Your Personal Statement
The personal statement is your chance to explain why this funding matters for your specific goals. Reviewers read hundreds of these — be specific, be honest, and avoid generic language. Write about what drives you, not what you think we want to hear.
Do
- Name your field of study and career goal
- Connect education to community impact
- Be specific about financial need
- Mention relevant experience or work
Avoid
- Generic statements about "wanting to help"
- Repeating your resume without reflection
- Exceeding the 500-word limit
- Leaving it to the last day
Gathering Documents
Request your official transcripts early. Most registrar offices take 3-5 business days to process transcript requests. Some charge a fee ($5-15 is typical). If your transcripts won't arrive by the deadline, submit unofficial transcripts and use the attestation form — then follow up with officials as soon as possible.
For your letter of recommendation, choose someone who knows your work ethic and goals — a professor, employer, or community leader. Give them at least two weeks' notice and a brief summary of the scholarship and your goals to help them write a strong letter.
Submitting Your Application
Before hitting submit, review every section. The portal has a built-in checklist that shows you what's complete and what's missing. Common issues that delay review: unsigned forms, unofficial (instead of official) transcripts, and personal statements that exceed the word limit.
Once submitted, you'll receive a confirmation email within 24 hours. If you don't, check your spam folder or contact TCF directly. You can log back into the portal at any time to check your application status.
After Submission
Higher Education Scholarship applications are reviewed within 6-8 weeks after the deadline. CTE Scholarship applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. You'll be notified by email about your award status.
If you're awarded a scholarship, funds are disbursed directly to your institution's financial aid office. You don't need to do anything extra — TCF handles the transfer. If you have questions about disbursement timing, contact your school's financial aid office and reference "The CIRI Foundation scholarship."
